Mill Chablis (89)

An authentic 19th-century watermill that has been turned into a charming guesthouse, nestled in a quaint village in France’s Yonne department. The property is nestled on the western edge of the village. A white double-leaf gate leads into it. On the right, a gravelled space runs alongside the watermill’s facade. The watermill is a huge rectangular building that faces south. Its large size and uniformity make the edifice stand out. It is made of small white stones that are typical of rural dwellings in the local region. A hipped slate roof crowns the building. To the left, there is a clear view of the arches of a bridge that crosses the River Serein, which flows beneath the watermill in the middle of it. From 1837 onwards, the building had several lives before it was converted into a guesthouse. The elongated edifice runs from east to west. It has four floors and a basement. Its tall, broad facade is punctuated with rectangular windows evenly spaced out and set in surrounds of dressed stone. Two stringcourses, embellished with decorative metal features, demarcate the levels. Many gabled dormers stand along the roof, which is crowned with finials. On the north side of the watermill, there is an outbuilding designed as a workshop and an area of lush land that extends along the millrace. On this rear side there is also a parking area for guests and visitors.

Mill Forcalquier (04)

To the north-east of the Luberon park, facing the Lure mountain, this old mill is located at the confluence of two rivers. Its land, planted with trees and flowers, is bordered by forests, fields and meadows as far as the eye can see, and has a heated swimming pool and a pond. The property, after being rehabilitated for the first time in the 1980s, was successively renovated by a London architect who had a luxury tourist rental project, then by the current owners, also architects, who were able to extract the quintessence of the property. elegance, while creating a welcoming family home. The main building offers several reception areas, around an equipped kitchen, with contemporary lines and quality materials, and a sleeping area made up of several large suites. Another wing accommodates an apartment, with living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. This part also has a traditional bread oven. Finally, at the bottom of the house, is the restored mill, made up of vaulted rooms; which provides access to a relaxation area with spa. A summer kitchen, designed like an orangery, completes this authentic part of the property. Work spaces, independent or indoors, storage, cellars, a workshop, a laundry room and other service rooms, as well as an ideally exposed courtyard and terrace complete the property. If the traditional character has been preserved, the comfort is resolutely in line with modern expectations. Sheltered from all nuisances, this site offers an ideal living environment for nature lovers.

Mill Chalons-en-champagne (51)

A large watermill nestled in the valley of the River Moivre in France’s Champagne region. In 1260, the village seigneur gave the Abbaye de Lachalade, which is located around 50 kilometres from the village, a plot of land beside a chapel so they could build a watermill there. We do not know the exact date when the first watermill was built here, but it was probably shortly after this plot was given. Throughout the Ancien Régime in France, the successive watermills here were all managed in the same way: the abbots from the Abbaye de Lachalade, the owners, would rent out the plot with the associated rights and would provide the millstones. An official lessor, usually a noble from Châlons-en-Champagne, would provide funding for construction and maintenance of the watermill. He himself would rent it out to a miller or employ this miller. In 1499, the King’s Treasurer for the province of Champagne bought the neighbouring farm and leased the mill. His descendants did the same up to 1764, when the current owner’s ancestor took over the place. The mill was restored in around 1850. Milling here ended in 1905. From a small secondary road, a long tarmacked drive leads up to the mill. This mill stands opposite the old farm, which is no longer part of the property. Only a path of white stones, which belongs to the neighbour, forms a boundary with the mill’s court. Behind the latter, the property includes a small garden enclosed with wrought-iron fencing and with the river that flows in a curve beneath the mill. In this garden there is an elegant 19th-century aviary with a zinc roof. On the other side of the river, the property extends with a ridge that looks down over the mill.

Mill Saint-Germain-sur-Avre (27)

A water mill dating from 1683 and its 7,000 m² of wooded grounds in the Avre valley, 90 km from Paris. Set away from the village, the property is separated into two parts by a bridge spanning the river. A wrought iron gate opens onto a driveway leading down to the mill. The impressive building with its red shutters and adjoining workshop stretches out lengthways, at right angles to the canal and edged by the river. A paved terrace encircles the dwelling as far as the bread oven. Wide wooden steps provide access from the wooded garden down to the riverbank. On the other side of the road, the second part of the property has been turned into a delightful water garden. The water outlet is protected by grilles and flows into a canal and from there into the reach. In this way, it bypasses the plot of land and flows into the Avre. At the back of the building, a shed adjoins the lock and its machinery. Meadows and woodlands form the surrounding landscape. Built in the 17th century, the rectilinear mill is three storeys high. It has a floor area of approx. 250 m². The stone and brick structure has a gable roof clad with old flat tiles and skylights. Each facade is punctuated by numerous windows, which are protected by brightly painted wooden shutters. The lintels, corner quoins, window surrounds and stringcourses between the storeys as well as the cornice are all of brick. Situated on the left bank of the sluice lock, the mill allowed the watercourse to flow from one branch of the river to the other. The wheel was located in a covered area that is still visible. Upstream, the lock gates regulate the flow of the river. The entire stonework of the reach has been preserved.

Mill Lamotte-Beuvron (41)

An old watermill converted into a hotel with outhouses and a swimming pool in over eight hectares of wooded grounds by a lake in France’s Sologne region. You enter the property from a local lane that runs through a wood, skirts around a little garden with a pavilion and takes you into a car park. From this car park, two paths lead towards the watermill. One path takes you to a terrace beside the little garden and to the watermill’s entrance door. The watermill faces south and east. The edifice is made of brick. Its elevations are mostly coated with pale rendering that leaves the building’s red timber framing exposed. The structure is crowned with gable roofs of flat tiles punctuated with wall dormers. The building has a ground floor and a first floor in its roof space. There are many windows on both levels. They are fitted with shutters that are painted red. The other path takes you to the outhouses and a courtyard behind the watermill. On the north side of the outhouses, there is a swimming pool. And at the foot of the mill’s south gable end, there is a raised terrace of timber decking that looks out at the lake. The property’s woodland lies to the east of the lake.

Mill Quimperle (29)

Ref.4116 : Emblematic mill in Brittany's Cournouaille region and its restored house. Located in southern Finistère, the Moulin de Mohot is an emblematic property in the valley along the River Ellé. Also known as Moulin Brûlé or Tymeur, this ancient water mill, whose first traces date back to the 15th century, contributed to the local economy until 1968. Isolated and sheltered in a bucolic and romantic green setting, the mill and its main house will delight you with their unique natural environment, imposing serenity to the rhythm and sound of flowing water. Between the coastline and its fine sandy beaches, Pont-Aven (whose artistic reputation is well established) and Pont-Scorff (art villages, zoo...), the state forest of Pontcallec (Natura 2000 site), there's no shortage of things to do and see. An essential point for those wishing to make this property an exceptional tourist accommodation or a place to recharge their batteries. There are numerous hiking trails within easy reach, including the GR34 (customs trail). The main house, formerly covered in straw, stands out for the shape of its roof, typical of many Breton thatched cottages. Facing the Ellé River, it offers an enchanting panorama. The house is built of rubble stone, local schist and granite. It offers around 136sqm of living space as follows: Ground floor: entrance hall, separate wc, open kitchen with monumental, round, double-sided wood-burning stove, magnificently framed by 4 master beams, living/dining room with cathedral ceiling revealing the timber frame and upstairs passageway, bedroom with en-suite shower room and wc (with external access). First floor: a bedroom with en suite bathroom and wc (independent access possible via an outside stone staircase / north gable), another bedroom with en suite shower room and wc. Continuing on from the main house, and overlooking the mill and the river, two terraces have been installed. The larger of these features a bread/pizza oven, which will undoubtedly be a welcome addition on spring and summer evenings. This space provides an incredible view and perspective of this extraordinary natural setting. Adjoining the large terrace is a large 24m² shed with central heating. Two garages and a 55m² workshop. A woodshed of approx. 8m². Below the retaining wall at the entrance to the property: a large wooden shed measuring approx. 34m² on the ground (equipment storage). The mill, framed by two river diversion canals, is in need of restoration. The large wheel inside is remarkable, reflecting the history of this unique property and the mill's active contribution to the local economy. The building was inhabited until the early 2000s. All utilities have now been run to the inside of the building, awaiting the future owner to bring it back to life. First floor (approx. 80m²): living room with fireplace, toilet, large room with monumental wheel and wooden axle (second fireplace). First floor: mezzanine, 2 rooms under eaves. Two terraces open onto an outdoor living space overlooking the river. The land, approx. 18 acres (7.45 ha), comprises a large proportion of woods (over 12.35 acres / 5 ha) and fields (over 4.94 acres / 2 ha). The fields are free of rights. A well fed by river water. The GR 34 passes through the property. The Ellé is a river renowned for its abundance of fish.
